Hey friends! Lots has happened in the months since my last posting. The good news is, lots of good news!

BLOG LOVE.
First, I'm so psyched to report that I’ve been getting some juicy press coverage as of late!

SOCIETY 6…NEW ONLINE STORE. I am super psyched to announce the launch of my Society6.com store. That’s right, at long last, I have a real for true, made to order, online store! Check it out...you can order prints of my work (framed, lots of choices of size and painting, and lots of cute frame choices!), stretched canvases, groovy iphone cases (that are looking amazing...they're my favorite), laptop covers, and soon, t-shirts and hoodies. How fun is that?! :)

COVETOSITY: ART & OTHER IDOL WORSHIP. Featuring my very favorite in art and design, my newly launched blog, Covetosity: Art & Other Idol Worship, is located right here at ericasteiner.com. It will be image-driven, a simple, daily (or quasi-daily) offering of art and design that I find particularly covetous and amazing. Sourced by my endless pinteresting, and the years before that of obsessively bookmarking the beautiful things that I find online, this blog has me feeling particularly impassioned...I'm so excited to share all the covetousness with you! SOLO SHOW. In the studio, I am working on finishing up a few last new pieces for my upcoming solo show at Gallery 160 at St. Mary's College in Moraga. I don't have dates yet, but it will be sometime this spring...will post details soon. Stay tuned…it’s gonna be awesome…

GAWKER. In other news: I have been selected to be among the ranks of the awesomely curated Gawker Artist Collective. That’s right: I am a gawker artist…I gawk! Gawker is amazing, and I’m really honored. For more information about them and their multifaceted, multifarious activities, check them out here.

BAYVAN. Another example of top notch curatorial moxie is the Bay Area Visual Arts Network (Bayvan) artist registry, which (yay!) has invited me back for a second year. Check them out here, but beware...you may lose hours wandering their digital corridors...it's an embarrassment of riches!

SOCIAL MEDIA…JOIN, FOLLOW, LIKE.  I’ve been actively cultivating my social media-ness, having dug into twitter and pinterest with much gusto, and having expanded my facebook accessibility and presence with a new fan page. Heaven is not the wide blue sky, but the place where corporeality is begotten in the House of the Creative.   -Lu Yen 

My newest series of oil and gold leaf paintings, Heaven is Not the Wide Blue Sky, explores a collective longing to touch and know realms beyond, to transcend both time and existential uncertainty in the face of rapid environmental degradation on a globally unprecedented scale. The work dwells at the psychic intersection of imagined, archetypal pasts and paradoxically playful yet apocalyptic futures, at once seeking to confront the gravity of our current human predicament and simultaneously seeking refuge in the pursuit of deeper patterns and rhythms that pulse beneath the surface of all life, imbuing the material world with ecstatic beauty and life force.

Incorporating elements of landscape, ornamentation and abstraction, the paintings employ a highly detailed visual language drawn from a wide range of influences, including traditional Indian, Tibetan Buddhist and Aboriginal painting, psychedelic art, contemporary graphic design, Japanese landscape painting, medieval Catholic illuminated manuscripts, mid-century modernism, Mexican folk art, and Victorian fashion. The work is rendered in oil and gold leaf on canvas, in series of fifteen to twenty paintings, painted in many layers, over time.

BayVan 2011 Artist Registry & EVFA Solo Show

Hi friends,

Just poking my head out from the studio this dark, chilly January day to to share some good news.

First, I just received word that I have been accepted into the Bay Area Visual Arts Network (BayVAN) Artist Registry for 2011. The registry of 100 artists is apparently the exclusive pool from which artists are selected for a number of curatorial goings-on throughout the year, at Oakland's Branch Gallery and at events curated by Branch Gallery around the Bay Area). I'm honored to have been selected for inclusion in the registry, and am looking forward to the opportunities that this inclusion might bring to bear in the coming year. In other news, I remain totally engrossed in finishing up the work for my upcoming solo show at Edgar Varela Fine Arts in downtown LA. The show runs March 12th-April 9th, 2011; RECEPTION IS SATURDAY, MARCH 12TH, 6-10 pm, EVFA, 727 S. Spring St, Downtown LA, on Gallery Row. In the meantime, if you have any spare light, creative energy or general, good-willed gusto, I hope you'll consider sending it my way. I am hugely proud and excited to announce that my dear friend/soul sister and brilliant aesthetician, Sarah Becker (pictured below) has just opened her own business, Sarah Becker Skincare, in the Marina District of San Francisco, and will be featuring rotating exhibitions of my paintings in her waiting room on an ongoing basis. Sarah is an incredibly gifted aesthetician with a profound and healing touch (I cannot recommend her highly enough--her facials are otherworldly), and her space is amazing...elegant/ ecclectic/ funky/ sublime...the most natural and gracious of habitats for my work. I'm so excited to be collaborating with her in this way.

Three Art Openings in Three nights: Monterey, Marin, Aptos

Hi friends,

I wanted to take a moment to lovingly invite my peoples (and their art-lovin pals) to attend any and all of my three art openings coming up this weekend, Sept. 10-12th. I plan to be in attendance at all three--a little worse for wear from all the driving, perhaps, but still, most definitely, with bells on--ready to meet new friends, catch up with old ones, and talk shop about my favoritest-ever-thing: ART.

"A Trip Worthwhile" will be the largest scale showing of my work this weekend, featuring a dozen or so of my paintings from the Ornamental Worlds series (painted circa 2007-8). (Please note: this show will not be debuting any new work; my current works-in-progress are slated to be released to the public as part of my solo show, Heaven is not the Wide Blue Sky, at Edgar Varela Fine Arts in LA in March, 2011, and will then travel to Portland for a second showing--details TBA--in May/June).  Not to dissuade you: this is a strong offering of some of my favorite pieces from the past few years, part of a strikingly well curated group show...definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. (Update: at the end of its run, the show will move to a second location, the brand new Echo Gallery on Cannery Row, just down from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, in October/November. Details to come.)

News from the space in between: Marin MOCA, Cabrillo College, Monterey and beyond

.

Man o man, time flies when you're down the rabbit hole! Somehow I have neglected to share any news since springtime...not quite sure how it happened. The good news is that there is much good news, beginning with incredible progress and energy in the studio (a.k.a. the rabbit hole), as I gear up for my solo show next March (2011) at Edgar Varela Fine Arts in downtown LA (where I will be debuting a batch of brand new work,  the fruit of two-plus intensive years of work). I am happy to report that as the series in progress nears completion, I am finding it beneficial to paint less and rest more, in order to renew my ability to see and grasp the work in its final stages. Today is one of those days of necessary rest (following a very intensive week), a lazy Saturday which I am happily spending watching the wild, gray Pacific ocean, and now, updating my blog, from the quiet space in between.

I'm happy to report that there are some exciting events coming up in the next few months. First, I just received word that I will have a piece in the upcoming group show in September/October, "Sounds of Silence" at the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art. The show is curated by Maria Madua, Director of SFMOMA's rental gallery in Fort Mason, San Francisco, and I am really happy and honored to be taking part. Dates are Sept. 4- Oct. 3, 2010; reception date is September 11, 5-7pm. For more info/details, check out my events calendar or MarinMoca.org.

I'm equally psyched to report that my painting, "Second Impermanence Tree" was chosen by curators Ruth Braunstein and Shannon Trimble of the illustrious Braunstein/Quay Gallery in San Francisco to be included in the upcoming exhibition "California" at the Cabrillo College Art Gallery.

Cabrillo happens to be located in Aptos, my former hometown and a place very near and dear to my heart, and I am really looking forward to having my Santa Cruz peeps at the reception! So, friends, mark your calendars fo Sunday, Sept. 12, 3-5; and, if you're not able to make it, the show runs August 30-September 24, 2010. If you're hankering to see more of my work in one place (the paintings DO talk to each other, I have been told), I have a larger show coming up in September/October at The Gallery at The Alternative Cafe, an unassuming but hip little joint tucked away in the foggy Monterey Bay that has managed in its time to be a draw to some of my favorite artists anywhere.

I will have ten pieces in the show (give or take), alongside the work of four talented artists, Gene Guynn, Jason Snyder, Christopher Polentz, and Patrick "Star27" Deignan. The public reception is Friday, September 10th; details are on my events page, and at thealternativecafe.com.

In other news, I was invited to participate in the ninth annual art auction and preview exhibition at Root Division, a truly unique and wonderful artist residency and arts education space/ gallery in the Mission District of San Francisco. This event offers an opportunity to score some really great art for cheap, while benefiting the community. Here is a taste of what will be on offer:

I donated the piece below, "Horizontal Tapestry (Blue and Orange)" to the auction; retail value: $800...reserve price: $100...an opportunity to score a piece of my work for a steal (and consider yourself a do-gooder in the process)...

Turning to the blogosphere, my work was featured this month in the online forum for the now shuttered but still digitally thriving gallery Eclectix.

The write-up describes this month's feature as a "web-only group exhibition of flora and fauna related art, some new, some not- but all are exceptional pieces. For your environmental inspiration." It is quite the visual feast; check it out here.

I was also pleased to have discovered my work highlighted this month in the blog of New Zealand artist Anne-Sophie Adelys, an honor considering her own striking work.

In the longer term, I will continue to be in mad scientist mode in the studio, cooking up the work for my solo show at Edgar Varela Fine Arts in March and April 2011 (EVFA is located on gallery row--fifth street in downtown Los Angeles). This show should be amazing, and I am SO excited about it! On the heels of the EVFA solo show, it looks like I will be heading to Portland, Oregon, for a second solo show...I will announce details when the stars align; for now, it looks like May or June. Root Division's 8th Annual Art Auction

Hi kids,

This is kind of a last minute posting, but I wanted to let you all know that my painting, "Time and Distance (with Orange Mountains)" will be up for bidding at Root Division's 8th Annual Art Auction, this Thursday night. The painting, regularly valued at $960, will have a reserve price of a mere $40! Chances are, you can bring it home for a steal. All proceeds benefit Root Division and its arts and education programs.

"Root Division's mission is to improve appreciation and access to the visual arts by connecting personal inspiration and community participation. We provide subsidized studio space to working artists in exchange for their service in creating shared learning opportunities for the community. Gone subterranean

.

Just poking my head out from my studio to let my friends know where I've been, and where I'll be, for the next few months: in mega-work mode to deliver my next series, which I am SOOOO excited about! The work will debut at a solo exhibition at Mina Dresden Gallery in San Francisco in spring of 2010 (most likely in May...will update my events calendar when I know the exact month), and then will travel down to Edgar Varela Fine Arts in LA for a solo exhibition at EVFA's new gallery space on Miracle Mile (again, dates will be posted as they are nailed down). 

In the meantime, there are shows underway featuring my most recent series (including a four-person show at Eclectix Gallery in Berkeley in March, 2010), and some groovy other happenings this winter, including the release of a book by UK author Laura Curran featuring inspiring, artsy-fartsy women (including yours truly), the pending release of a line of shmingy-skins (skins for ipods, blackberries, and other star trek equipment), and the release of a Roxy snowboard for women and girls, based on my painting, Crossing of the Sun.

So yeah, lots of fun stuff in the works. Stick around.

CA-Boom Design Show, Beverly Hills
